The Training of Judicial Officers on the East African Community Legal Framework organized by East African Judicial Education Committee (EAJEC) and the EAC Secretariat in collaboration with Burundi National Judiciary concluded today in Bujumbura, Burundi.
The 19th – 22nd May training aimed at developing and increase knowledge of Judicial Officers on EAC Legal Framework and the role of Judiciary in EAC integration processes as well as to effectively build their capacity on their roles in EAC integration matters.
Addressing the Judicial Officers at the training during the official opening, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Burundi, Hon. Emmanuel Jenje underscore the importance of the judiciary in the EAC integration process and emphasized that the training would offer an opportunity for the stakeholders to play an active role in the promotion of the Judiciary and its vital role in the EAC integration on one hand; and to participate in the development of the East African Community, on the other.
He further noted that, as the East African Community integration deepens, with all the five Partner States getting closer to become one entity, the region could not afford to ignore the need for more harmonization and standardization of the National laws, institutional policies and practices, taking into cognizance the international best practices.
Hon Chief Justice Jenje reiterated that the training would provide a perfect opportunity for members of the Judiciary to learn from and to share different leadership experiences.
In his part Judge President of the East African Court of Justice, Hon. Harold Nsekela reminded Judicial Officers that asinterpreters and arbitrators of disputes in the region, they have a specific role in the EAC and encouraged them to take advantage of the forum and identify modern innovations to promote efficiency and effectiveness in the judicial systems of the Partner States.
He pointed out the importance of the training as a steppingstone in the operationalization of the Provisions of Articles 5 and 126 of the Treaty for the establishment of the East African Community.
The training of Judicial Officers featured different presentations include General Overview of EAC the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community; The EAC Customs Union: Milestones and Challenges; The EAC Common Market: Milestones and Challenges and Progress on the Implementation of the Protocol on the establishment of the EAC Monetary Union.

Other presentation were: The Evolution of the Jurisprudence of the East African Court of Justice; Overview of the Progress towards the EAC Political Federation; Cross Border Legal Practice within the East Africa Community; The Role of the National Judiciaries in the implementation of the integration process as well as Execution and Enforcement of EACJ Judgments.
In attendance were Judges of the East African Court of Justice, Judges from the Partner States National Courts, Worships Registrars and Magistrates; Counsel to the Community as well as representatives from the Partner States and Staff from the EAC Secretariat.
