EACJ PRINCIPAL JUDGE PRESENTS CERTIFICATE AWARDS TO THE MOOT COURT COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS

East African Court of Justice Arusha 3 March 2013: The East African Court of Justice, Principal Judge Hon. Mr. Justice Jean Bosco Butasi today presented certificate awards to the participants in the Jessup Moot Court competition organized by the Office of Tanzania National Administrator which was hosted by the East African Court of Justice. Two Universities participated in the National competitions were St. Augustine University Mwanza and the University of Dar es Salaam.


The winning team which will be announced by the Authorities later, will there after represent the Country in the Competitions at the International level in the United States of America in Washington DC which take place annually.


The Principal Judge congratulated all the participants and encouraged the students to continue competing as a team not only in Tanzania but be prepared to compete at the International Level. He told the students participating that they should familiarize themselves with the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community because it is now domesticated into National laws of EAC Partner States. Justice Butasi also urged the participants to know the International laws, respect them and apply them in the National Courts.




Justice Butasi further said that EACJ has previously hosted two Jessup Moot Court competition and this is the 3rd one and encouraged the Organizers to continue coming to EACJ because it is their Court. He also emphasized that the winning team if announced they have a big role to play in representing the Country to the International rounds therefore they need commitment to prepare though roughly for the international competition; should plan to win not to participate; and to build team spirit.


The Principal Judge appreciated the Office of Tanzania National Administrator represented by the Mr. Pasience Mlowe, the National Administrator for consistently organizing the moot Court which enables the Students come out of the Universities as well trained and competent Lawyers specifically equipped with knowledge in the International Laws.


Judges presided the 2014 National competition included Anees Ahmed, Douglass Hansen, Abigail Bridgeman all from the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and Mr. Selemani Kinyunyu from Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU).
