Germany signs new commitment to support the
provision of water and energy as well as Serengeti Nationalpark
KfW Development Bank on behalf
of the German Development Cooperation today signed new commitments of 55 Mio.
EUR (121.89 billion TSH) to Tanzania in order to support the provision of water and energy infrastructure as
well as Serengeti Nationalpark.
The grant agreements between Ministry of Finance and
KfW on behalf of the German Government were signed today by Dr. Likwelile, PS
Finance; Mr. Felchesmi Mramba, Managing Director of TANESCO, Eng. Bashiri
Mrindoko, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water; Mr. Modestus LILUNGULU, Board
Chairman of TANAPA; and Wolfgang Solzbacher, Director of the KfW office in Dar
Es Salaam in the presence of Chargé d´Affaires at the German Embassy in
Tanzania, Mr. Hans Koeppel.
Under the terms of the agreement, Germany makes available grant funding of 20 million Euros
(i.e. 43,96 billion
TSH) for a new transmission line from Geita to Nyakanazi in North West Tanzania
in order to provide access
to electricity for 32,500 beneficiaries in rural North West Tanzania.
Furthermore, the power line will connect the regional 80 MW hydropower project
Rusumo Falls to the national grid. Once implemented, the project will enable
exchange of power with the neighbouring countries Rwanda and Burundi, thus
enhance regional integration and stability of power supply.
Furthermore, the German Government will provide EUR 15 million (i.e. 32,97 billion TSH) for
increased access to potable water and sanitation services in Tanzania, thus
continuing its long and fruitful collaboration with the Government of Tanzania
in the water sector. By pooling the grant in the “water basket” funding
mechanism of the Tanzanian Government, Germany joins forces with other Development
Partners to support the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP). Since the beginning of the WSDP in 2007 almout 7
million people gained access to clean and safe water.
Finally, German Financial Cooperation supports Tanzania National Parks Authority
(TANAPA) with a financial contribution of 20,5 Mio. EUR (i.e. 45.059 billion
TSH) for the wider Serengeti Ecosystem as part of the Tanzanian German
Development Programme “Sustainable Management and Conservation of
Biodiversity”. The objective is to promote conservation of biodiversity,
including anti-poaching, as well as sustainable management of natural resources
and socio economic development within Serengeti National Park and in selected districts
adjacent to the Park, a Tanzanian treasure chest of global biodiversity
declared by UNESCO in 2001 as a World Heritage Site and concomitant an
important factor for tourism and socio economic development in Tanzania. The
support will include investments into land- and natural resource use planning,
social infrastructure development and feeder road rehabilitation in Loliondo
and Serengeti District as well as Park infrastructure and equipment. The
project will be implemented by TANAPA in cooperation with Frankfurt Zoological
Society.
